Nearly 150 students compete at SkillsUSA

By Staff Reports

Posted Feb. 13, 2016 at 5:37 PM

Approximately 150 students represented Apple Valley Unified School District at the Region Six SkillsUSA Regional Conference, of which 83 will advance to the state competition this spring. The regional leadership events took place Jan. 23 at Granite Hills High School and the regional skills events took place on Jan. 30 at and around San Bernardino Valley College. The regional competition attracted an estimated 1,200 students from nearly 60 schools.

AVUSD’s Brad Williams and Ryan Ostlie serve as the coordinators for Region Six, which spans San Bernardino, Mono, Orange, Inyo, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial counties. Williams said all of the district’s career technical programs participate in the competition and that the “most valuable takeaway” for students is the combination of “leadership skills and soft skills”.

Natalie Biendara, senior at Apple Valley High School received a gold medal in the Digital Cinema Production event.

“This year, I really connected to the prompt,” Biendara said, “so creating the video was basically just visualizing my dream.”

George Lasko, also a senior at Apple Valley High School received a gold medal in the Related Technical Math event.

“Related Technical Math sounds like a burden, and it was,” he said. “Except it was awesome being able to prove that I am good at math.”

SkillsUSA conferences are divided into two sections: leadership and skills. Leadership events hone in on soft-skills, such as public speaking, community service projects, public speaking and mock interviews. Skills events focus specifically on various skill sets, such as computer programming, automotive service technology, aviation maintenance, culinary arts, robotics, video production and health occupations. Competitions are judged by industry partners in corresponding career fields.

The Skills USA California 49th Annual State Leadership and Skill Conference will take place March 31 to April 3 in San Diego. State gold medalists will advance to nationals in Louisville, Kentucky. Last year, AVUSD sent 13 students to nationals and officials hope to continue this trend with expanding school programs and student opportunities.

Thank you Mr. Ostlie senior for coming to do mock interviews for some of our CAMP juniors. Eleven students interviewed in front of the class and practiced their introduction and professionalism skills. The top students in three categories won prizes. The categories were best introduction, best non-verbal skills, and best overall interview (hired).

C.A.M.P. Field trip

Posted by Gretchen Peratt on 01-12-2015

On November 21, 2014 the C.A.M.P. students went to see Mockingjay Part One.  It is based on the third book of the Hunger Games trilogy. The previous year C.A.M.P. went and watched Catching Fire. We walked to the Digiplex theater in Apple Valley located a few minutes from the school. We got our snacks and filled the theater with C.A.M.P. kids. We conducted the field trip to view aspects of the high action film such as camera angles. Overall, it was a memorable experience that we all loved and hope to do next year.

CAMP Olympics

Posted by Gretchen Peratt on 01-12-2015

We won the Academy Olympics! The Academy Olympics took place on September 19, 2014.  They were a series of games where CAMP and the other academy MAHST, the Medical and Health Science Technology pathway, compete for a trophy and, of course, bragging rights. There were several interesting games to participate in such as Bobbing for Bubble Gum, the Squeeze the Sponge Game, the Egg Run, Tug of War, and the Wheelbarrow Race.  Next year, we will definitely beat HOSA again with our amazing skills!

C.A.M.P Bonding Day

Posted by Gretchen Peratt on 01-09-2015

To further unite the students of the C.A.M.P. Academy, we hosted the first ever C.A.M.P. Bonding Day. This event was a day of fun and games which further united the tight knit C.A.M.P. Academy. Each game was specifically designed to enhance the trust and friendliness among the different grade levels within C.A.M.P.

One of the games we played was the Human Knot as a way to force the students to both cooperate and establish position of leadership among the groups.

One of the activities was the tower building challenge, but with a twist. Each group had a different set of materials and had to trade to acquire what they needed to build the tallest tower.

Even the teachers participated in some of the activities like the Human Table.
